VocProf Vocabulary Trainer - Frequently Asked Questions
The following lists give answers to frequently asked questions. If you're encountering problems or errors while using VocProf, please refer to the FAQ or contact the support team.
FAQ: General questions regarding "VocProf Vocabulary Trainer 2.0"
Which languages does VocProf Vocabulary Trainer support?
With VocProf you can learn all Germanic and Romance languages (such as French, Spanish, Italian, Latin, German, English, Portuguese, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish and many more!). VocProf does not contain any ready-made vocabulary lists (except for a few examples in English and German) but rather provides you with everything necessary to create your own vocabulary lists.
How many words can a vocabulary unit containt?
Actually, there is no limit! You can add as many words to a vocabulary file as you want to. But please note: The more words you add to your file, the more uncomfortable can a test or learning session with this unit become. It is highly recommended that you keep your units small and handy. It is advisable not to add more than 50 (primary) words to a unit!
Does VocProf support the IPA font (International Phonetic Association)?
Yes, it does! You cannot learn a foreign language properly without sticking to a decent pronunciation. With VocProf you can provide phonetic transcriptions for each word using the column "pronunciation". As you can define your own font settings, you can easily use the IPA fonts for your transcriptions.
How to use the IPA fonts: First, you need to download the free IPA fonts. Go to www.sil.org/computing/fonts/encore-ipa.html and download the Windows™ font package "SIL IPA Fonts". Install the package with a double click and restart your machine. The font has been installed on your system now. Please start VocProf, log in and then go to the "settings" dialog. Click the button "..." next to "Pronunciation". Now you can choose "SILDoulos IPA93" from the list (set at least 14pt in font size!). Click "Apply" to activate the IPA fonts.
Now you can use the IPA font in the column "Pronunciation" in the editor. Using the font is not very easy, though. It is recommended to download and print the keyboard layout: ipa_layout.zip (word file).
Please note: To make sure that other users can view and work with your vocabulary units (in case you want to share them), please do not forget to mention that you are using the IPA Fonts in the "pronunciatio" column of the editor. You can use the "user comments" text field for those notes (choose "details" in the "file management" when saving your unit).

FAQ: Questions concerning the trial/shareware version
What is a trial/evaluation version?
A trial/evaluation version is free, fully functional software that is provided for evaluation purposes. A trial/evaluation version allows you to test and use a commercial software title before purchasing it, though the evaluation time is usually limited to a certain period. It can thus be used to test its compatibility and assess its features. If you like the software and would like to use it beyond the evaluation period, you can buy a license to turn the trial/evaluation version (shareware) into the full, unlimited version.
VocProf is available as a free trial (evaluation version). The evaluation version is not limited but can only be used for a certain trial period. If you would like to use VocProf beyond that time, you can order the full version here.
How can I turn the free evaluation version/trial into the full, registered version?
When ordering VocProf via the online order, you will receive a license key via e-mail, which you can use to turn the free trial version into the full, registered version of VocProf. Doing so, VocProf will transfer all your user files and settings so that you can continue working with VocProf immediately. Hence, you do not have to install a separate full version so that you can keep all your files and settings.
Your license key will be shipped with detailed step-by-step instructions on how to unlock the full version of VocProf. These are the necessary steps:
- Start VocProf and create (if you haven't done so far) a new user account.
- In the shareware dialog click "register".
- Enter the access key provided in your license information.
- Enter the licensee and license key provided in your license information. This step is case sensitive. Do not add any additional white spaces! Do not use "copy & paste" but type in the necessary data manually.
- Restart your computer and VocProf for the changes to take effect.
FAQ: Common errors and problems
I've come across a program error. What can I do?
First of all: No program is free of any errors or faults. Software errors may upset you from time to time but they should not hamper you from working. VocProf has been equipped with a powerful error routine. Each time an error is raised, VocProf displays an error message providing additional information on the runtime error. This message is saved in a file called "errors.txt" or "errors_assist.txt" in the sub-directory "error-files" in your VocProf user directory (see under "My Files"). Under certain circumstances, you are allowed to proceed in the program. Sometimes, though, proceeding is impossible and you need to shut down the application. This is really annoying but cannot always be avoided. That is why you should create regular backups of your work.
If you encounter a specific problem regularly, please do the following: Send us an E-Mail (see contact) and try to describe your problem as exactly as possible. Please enclose the error file(s) and any vocabulary units that might be affected by this error. We can only help you if you provide us with detailed information!
